Profile

PROFILE is a steady state soil chemistry model first created to calculate the effect of acid rain on soil acidification. PROFILE includes process-oriented descriptions of chemical weathering of minerals, leaching and accumulation of dissolved chemical components and solution equilibrium reactions.

In PROFILE, the soil is divided into different soil layers with different properties, preferably based on the naturally occurring soil stratification. PROFILE was first created in 1987 and has been used world wide since that.

Weathering is calculated using transition state theory and the geochemical properties of the soil system e.g. soil wetness, mineral surface area, hydrogen, cation and organic acid concentrations, temperature and mineral composition.

A new version of SAFE and PROFILE is under development. If you have suggestions for a cooperation with us in which you would like to use the SAFE/PROFILE model, contact Mattias Alveteg. The description of the new version SAFE/PROFILE model is yet to be written, but there is a list with some of the important changes since PROFILE 4
